POETRY 2025

               5 Steps to Write or

Find a Poem! by Dr. Özlem ÇAKMAKOĞLU

               1. Have a board pen.
               2. Find a written text from a magazine, newspaper, book, or article.
               3. Take a glance at your page until you find your words or phrases.
               4. Start redaction and feel comfortable messing up with lines.
               5. Black out the words and/or sentences rest of the words that resonate with your
               selection.

Blackout poetry, sometimes called Erasure or Found Poetry, is poetry in which you write
a poem without waiting for your muse but using your creative influence. It is an
experimental technique found by poet and cartoonist Austin Kleon and became popular
after his book Newspaper Blackout was published in 2010.

This type of poetry serves to challenge the notion that poetry is an exclusive art form
meant only for a select few. By showcasing diverse voices and experiences, it emphasizes
that anyone, regardless of their background or education, can express themselves
creatively through poetry. This form encourages individuals to explore their thoughts and
feelings in written verse, breaking down barriers and making poetry accessible to all.
Don’t hesitate to give it a try. Provide your inner artist with a pen and a piece of paper,
then find a quiet corner and wait to discover the creation.
